Community Tool Shed Open

Youngstown residents can now borrow the tools they need for FREE through the Community Toolshed by making an appointment with toolshed coordinator Laina Wells. The tool shed is open 9 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday and is located at the YNDC office at 820 Canfield Rd. Youngstown, OH 44511. Read more.

Youngstown Farmers Market Launches at B&O

More than 500 individuals attended the initial Youngstown Farmers Market at the B&O Station on Mahoning Ave. on Wednesday, June 13. The market featured fresh produce from local farmers, including strawberries, apples, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, and plants.  Read more.

Southside Summer Experience Kicks Off with Event on South Avenue

The Southside Summer Experience is a series of pop-up events and day camps that provide positive activities throughout the South Side for youth and their families. As part of the US DOJ Community Based Crime Reduction project, the pop-up events are a partnership between the Youngstown Police Department, YNDC and the ICU Block Watch and they are intended to provide activities for youth on the south side who do not have access to a park or playground in their neighborhoodRead more.

US Conference of Mayors and Wells Fargo Award City of Youngstown and YNDC the First Place Small City 2018 CommunityWINS Grant for $150,000 for REVITALIZE Youngstown

On Sunday, June 10, 2018, the US Conference of Mayors and Wells Fargo awarded the First Place Small City 2018 CommunityWINS Grant for $150,000 to the City of Youngstown and YNDC for REVITALIZE Youngstown. The award program honors the best neighborhood stabilization efforts in the country and YNDC’s work was selected as the best in the country in the small city category. Read more.

Homeowner Spotlight: Gary Petronelli

Gary enrolled in YNDC’s HUD-Approved Housing Counseling program while living in an apartment on the North Side after the VA connected him with our Housing Counselor Tammi. After a few short months in Housing Counseling, Gary said things came together and he was ready to buy his home. Gary, a veteran of the United States Navy, was born in Warren but spent over 30 years of his life living elsewhere. He returned to the area from Florida with only the clothes on his back, homeless, and suffering from lingering health issues due to an injury. Read more.

Community Based Crime Reduction Project Seeks to Reduce Crime on South Side

Implementation of the US DOJ Community Based Crime Reduction project is underway. The project started with data analysis to identify concentrations and patterns of crime in a targeted area on the South Side, between Market. St. and Zedaker.  The crime analysis is being used to deploy targeted Youngstown Police Department patrols during peak times of illegal activity. Read more.

Homeowner Spotlight: Ashley Bowers and Julio Contreras

Newlyweds Ashley Bowers and Julio Contreras moved into their new home at 1735 Pointview Avenue in late May. Ashley was born and raised in Youngstown and has lived here most of her life. Julio was born in Guatemala and has lived in Youngstown for about three months. Ashley says she was drawn to the Powerstown Neighborhood because it is quiet and close to her job as a nurse. The couple found the home on YNDC’s social media and thought it looked ideal for them. Read more.

Volunteers Clean Up 2246 Glenwood at Idora Neighborhood Workday

On Saturday, June 16, twenty-seven volunteers helped to clean up and landscape the exterior of 2246 Glenwood Avenue at the Idora Neighborhood Workday. Volunteers helped to remove 40 cubic yards of debris, plant 30 hostas, and spread mulch! Read more.

Hine Memorial Fund Provides Grant for Accessibility Projects at Two City Parks

The Hine Memorial Fund of the Youngstown Foundation has given YNDC $54,683 to fund park improvements designed to increase access to individuals with disabilities. At Jackson Park, funding will be used to pave a walking trail and install a curb ramp, in order to make the existing path more accessible.  Read more.

Chemical Bank Awards $15,000 Grant to YNDC to Support Housing Counseling

On Monday, June 11, the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation was awarded a $15,000 grant from Chemical Bank to support YNDC's Housing Counseling program. YNDC's HUD-Approved Housing Counseling program assists clients with credit or financial problems to address those issues, secure a bank loan, and become homeowners. Read more.

Frank and Pearl E. Gelbman Charitable Foundation Awards YNDC $15,000 for Corridor Improvement Corps

On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, the Frank and Pearl Gelbman Charitable Foundation awarded YNDC with a $15,000 grant for Corridor Improvement Corps. The Corridor Improvement Corps is a comprehensive revitalization strategy aimed at improving public health, safety, and quality of life for residents by leveraging AmeriCorps members and community volunteers to complete physical improvements to Youngstown’s neighborhood corridors. Senator Maurice and Florence Lipscher Charitable Fund Awards $8,329 Grant to YNDC for 2246 Glenwood Avenue

On Monday June 18, the Senator Maurice and Florence Lipscher Charitable Fund awarded an $8,329 grant to YNDC for the revitalization of 2246 Glenwood Avenue. The grant award funds will be used to renovate 2246 Glenwood Avenue, a vacant commercial building that will be used to attract businesses to the Greater Glenwood Avenue Corridor on the south side of Youngstown.
