YNDC and Partners Break Ground at 650 Clearmont Drive

Representatives from Home Savings and The City of Youngstown joined YNDC Team members and AmeriCorps REVITALIZE Team Members for a groundbreaking event at 650 Clearmont on Thursday, May 10. Attendees broke ground at the site to mark the start of YNDC’s rehabilitation of the historic 4-unit apartment building on the Glenwood Corridor, the organization’s largest rehab to date. Work has begun at 650 Clearmont including electric work and installation of a new roof, vinyl windows, glass block, and doors. Trees and stumps have been removed from the surrounding yard and the interior has been cleaned out and prepared for rehabilitation. The building will serve as four residential housing units upon completion. YNDC and Western Reserve Port Authority Begin Partnership to REVITALIZE 2246 Glenwood Avenue

On Tuesday, May 22, YNDC and the Western Reserve Port Authority (WRPA) began a partnership to revitalize 2246 Glenwood Avenue.YNDC has entered a short term lease with the WRPA and will purchase the property at the end of that lease. YNDC will make improvements to the property and develop a plan to attract businesses to locate in the facility. Read more.

YNDC and Mercy Health Foundation Announce New Farmers Market

A new farmers market will begin operation at the B&O Station, located at 530 Mahoning Avenue, to serve patients in the Mercy Health Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program and the general public. The first market will take place on Wednesday, June 13 from 10am-3pm and there will be a market on the second Wednesday of each month through October. Individuals with SNAP/EBT can double their purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables through the Produce Perks program, doubling up to $30 per market. Read more.

YNDC Announces 11 Youth Greening Projects

YNDC is excited to provide assistance to 11 groups to complete youth greening projects on 37 vacant lots.The projects will engage neighborhood youth in the completion and maintenance of greening projects. Read more.

William Swanston Charitable Fund Awards YNDC with $100,000 Grant to Combat Childhood Obesity

On Wednesday, May 9, the William Swanston Charitable Fund awarded a $100,000 grant to YNDC. The grant award will be utilized by YNDC and its partners to reduce childhood obesity in Youngstown’s neighborhoods through strategic investments in the built environment at four city parks that serve the highest numbers of children in the city. Housing Counseling Client Spotlight - Claire Hawkins

Claire Hawkins has been participating in YNDC’s FREE, HUD-Approved Housing Counseling program since 2014 and recently purchased her first home. “It’s everything I wanted in a house,” said Claire. She moved to the area from Alabama and saw an ad for the Housing Counseling program on Facebook after renting homes in Youngstown for a few months. Read more.

YNDC Sells Three Revitalized Homes in May 2018

YNDC closed on the sale of three homes in May 2018. 1735 Pointview Avenue  in the Powerstown Neighborhood on the South Side sold on May 10 for $45,000. 1823 Fifth Avenue sold on May 21 for $59,000 and 454 Madera Avenue sold on May 24 for $86,500. Both homes are located in the Crandall Park Neighborhood on the North Side. Read more.

Youngstown Elementary Schools Participate in Walk to School Day

Two Youngstown City elementary schools celebrated Walk to School Day this week through the Safe Routes to School Program. YNDC Team Members educated students about pedestrian safety and held activities for the children during recess at Wilson Elementary on Tuesday and Taft Elementary on Wednesday. The Safe Routes to School program is a partnership between the City of Youngstown and Youngstown City School District that seeks to encourage students to safety walk and bicycle to school. Homeowner Spotlight – May 2018

Destiny recently moved into her new home at 138 South Glenellen Avenue on the West Side of Youngstown! Destiny is from Erie, Pennsylvania and has lived in Youngstown for seven years. She said one of the main things that attracted her to the neighborhood was the proximity of her new home to West Side locations she can walk to with her daughter like the West Side Bowl Bowling Alley and the new Michael Kusalaba Branch Library right down the street. Volunteers Clean Up around Youngstown Playhouse at Idora Neighborhood Workday

On Saturday, May 19, thirty volunteers participated in the Idora Neighborhood Workday at the Youngstown Playhouse. Volunteers from AutoSoft Inc., Freedom Church, Friends of the Mahoning River, JJC, Own Ski Roofing, Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church/Hope for Renewal, Ursuline High School, The City of Youngstown, The Youngstown Playhouse, YSU, and YSU Honors helped to remove 65 cubic yards of debris! Read more.
